A Call to Other MWBE and SBA-Aligned Organizations

by | Aug 9, 2026 | Business Resources

Central New York Is About to Grow Fast. Let’s Make Sure Small and Minority-Owned Businesses Grow With It.

Something significant is happening in Central New York. Micron Technology’s planned investment in local semiconductor manufacturing is one of the largest economic development opportunities this region has seen in a generation. Most of the public conversation so far has focused, understandably, on jobs and workforce pipelines.

But there’s a second story that deserves just as much attention: what happens to the small businesses, and especially the minority and women-owned businesses, that make up the backbone of our local economy? New organizations have emerged since 2019, when NYS Legislation reauthorized and expanded Article 15-A with stronger utilization targets.

The Pattern We Can’t Afford to Repeat

Across the country, post-pandemic recoveries have too often followed a “K-shaped” path,  large employers bounce back and keep climbing, while small and mid-sized firms stall well below where they started. Big institutions land the major contracts. Big suppliers get the introductions. Everyone else is left trying to find a way in.

Central New York doesn’t have to follow that same script. But avoiding it takes deliberate effort, not good intentions alone. A generational investment like Micron’s will generate real demand, in construction, professional services, logistics, IT, food service, and more. Whether that demand actually reaches MWBE firms and other small businesses in our region depends on whether we build the relationships, readiness, and connective tissue now, before the opportunity arrives.

Why This Is a “We” Problem, Not a “You” Problem

No single organization, no single consultant, no single chamber, no single training provider can prepare this region’s small businesses alone. It takes:

  • MWBE-certified firms who know firsthand what it takes to compete for supply-chain and public-private contracts
  • SBA-connected organizations and lenders who understand the capital gaps holding smaller firms back
  • Workforce and curriculum developers who can build the technical and operational readiness businesses will need
  • Community-rooted nonprofits doing the trust-building and outreach work that no cold outreach campaign can replace

Purposeful Concepts LLC has spent years in this work, building curriculum, guiding businesses through MWBE certification, and helping organizations navigate compliance and readiness. We’ve seen up close how much stronger the outcome is when organizations coordinate instead of compete for the same narrow lane.

A Call to Other NYS MWBE and SBA-Aligned Organizations

If your organization is doing this work anywhere in Central New York, training, certifying, lending, advocating, or connecting small businesses to opportunity, we want to hear from you. Not to duplicate what you’re already doing well, but to find where our efforts can reinforce each other.

The businesses we’re all trying to serve don’t experience “workforce development,” “capital access,” and “certification support” as separate categories. They experience one tangled set of barriers, and they need a coordinated response, not a fragmented one.

Central New York’s small and minority-owned businesses have the talent and the drive to compete for what’s coming. The question is whether the region’s support organizations show up ready to move together.

If that’s a conversation you want to have, reach out. Let’s build this the right way – together. Email: Barbara@purposefulconceptsllc.com

As a Long-Term Care Facility (LTC) or Nursing Home
