Black History Month
Values Lens: Learn why #educationmatters and emotional regulation is important for our youth to learn in school curriculum. Many schools no longer use textbooks and are hesitant to issue Chromebooks to students in middle school. We develop an overview after collaborating with the teacher in what their goals are. We then provide an overview along with a PowerPoint Presentation (PPT), with any additional message they want to review at the beginning of class that they project from a SMART board. Here’s the PPT, and Student Journaling Companion and February overview.
At Purposeful Concepts LLC we write custom curriculum for teachers and programs that implement standardized curriculum. This message can be embedded in core studies as well as elective classes. I wanted to share a sample of what a Music teacher client who teaches in a city public school, is using this month. This school literally has a classroom named The Joe Bonamassa music room where students were unaware of the history of the blues music and the region of Tunica County which was one of the poorest places in America. “Sugar Ditch Alley” became a national symbol of extreme poverty, an area with an open sewer and unsafe living conditions. Many families lacked jobs, clean water, and basic services. Introducing students to factual Black History within worksheets offers valuable and relevant information.
Take a look at a sample of our PCLLC tools ©, with worksheets, a Student Journaling Companion (which provides answers and offers a sample of what an answer would look like for students to follow), and PowerPoint slides that teachers can use to guide students as they complete their paper worksheets. PCLLC worksheets come with answer sheets for teachers to offer students that contribute to a deeper understanding of social change along with workforce development skills. Take a look at three of our week two assignments; where “Sugar Ditch Alley” to Casino Boom: Understanding Social Change depicts how students can reflect on:
- What values guide my choices
- How I treat people close to me
- How I can break harmful patterns
- How I can contribute to community healing
